CHAMPAGNE RECEPTIONS

Gold Shield Champagne Receptions began life in 1947 as simple teas where tribute was paid to scholarship winners, donors, and distinguished members of the UCLA family. Although the beverage of choice gradually changed to champagne, the nature of these events remains the same. Since 1986, recipients of the Gold Shield Faculty Prize have been honored in alternate years. This following list of honorees and locations reads like a UCLA Who's Who.

1947 • In January, at the home of Provost and Mrs. Clarence E. Dykstra for new Gold Shield members and donors to the scholarship fund

1947 • In May, honoring Pulitzer Prize winner and UCLA graduate Bruce Russell

1948 • Honoring outstanding alumnus Matt Weinstock at the home of Lucy Quirk (Toberman)

1949 • In January, a Donors' tea at the home of Provost Clarence Dykstra

1949 • In February, a UCLA 30th Anniversary reception at Provost Dykstra's

1950 • In January, a Donors' tea at Provost Dykstra's

1950 • In May, at the home of Tom and Elizabeth Davis honoring Jane Mary Eklund, Gold Shield member and author of Only Gift

1953 • Donors' tea at the William Clark Memorial Library

1954 • Honoring scholarship winners at the home of Chancellor and Mrs. Raymond Allen

1956 • In January, a Donors' tea at Chancellor Allen's home

1956 • In May, honoring Alumnus of the Year John Canaday at Ella Mae Manwarring's home

1958 • Honoring Alumnus of the Year chemist Saul Winstein at the home of Phil and Carol Davis

1959 • Honoring Alumnus of the Year Warren Crowell at the Stafford Warren residence

1960 • Honoring Alumnus of the Year Dr. Charles Schottland at the home of Cyrus and Edith Niggs

1961 • Honoring Alumnus of the Year Thomas Cunningham at Chancellor Franklin Murphy's residence

1962 • Honoring all recipients of Alumni Association Awards at the home of Bill and Ann Forbes

1963 • At Chancellor Murphy's residence honoring faculty retiring after 25 years as full professors.

1964 • At Lew and Adele Whitney's residence

1965 • Honoring Regent Edward and Hannah Carter in the UCLA Japanese Gardens

1966 • Honoring past presidents of the Alumni Association at the home of Pat and Roy Steele

1967 • Honoring new Vice Chancellor Dr. Rosemary Park at the home of Joy and Bob Haldeman

1968 • Honoring Vice Chancellor and Professor of Chemistry William G. Young at the Carol Davis home

1969 • Honoring new Chancellor Charles Young at Franklin and Judy Murphy's home

1970 • At the UCLA Sculpture Garden honoring John Jackson and Andrew Hamilton, authors of Gold Shield publication UCLA On The Move

1971 • Honoring Gold Shield Founders on Gold Shield's 35th Anniversary at Elizabeth Davis' home

1972 • Honoring Dr. Stafford Warren, founding Dean, UCLA Medical School, at the home of Tom and Elyse Harmon

1973 • Honoring Judge William Keene, President of the Alumni Association and newest member of the Board of Regents, in the patio of the UCLA Law School Building

1974 • Honoring Blanche and Bob Campbell at Virginia and Jim Jackson's home

1975 • Honoring Dr. Charles Speroni, Dean of the College of Fine Arts, at the Chancellor's residence

1976 • Honoring Franklin and Judy Murphy at the James E. West Alumni Center

1977 • Honoring University of California President and Mrs. David Saxon at John and Judy Postley's home

1978 • Honoring Florence Ridley, first woman Chair of the UCLA Academic Senate, at Bea and Leonard Mandel's home

1979 • Honoring Dr. Sherman Mellinkoff, Dean of the School of Medicine, at the Franklin Murphy home
