Gold
Shield and Oral History were linked in 1970 through the efforts
of founding member Ann Sumner. At the time, Oral History was a fledgling
program at UCLA. In the ensuing years Gold Shield provided financial
backing and volunteer aid, donated equipment, helped with publicity,
published the catalog, and in general acted as a "friends" group to
the Oral History Program. By 1982, Gold Shield was committing annually
to a $5000 gift that included sponsorship of a student intern interview
or project. When an intern is not available, Gold Shield continues
to support an Oral History Interview in the field of university history
annually. Overall, the organization has provided more than $150,000
to the UCLA program which is now one of the most prestigious Oral
History Programs in the nation. In 2006 the UCLA Oral History Program
requested that Gold Shield focus on the awarding of Oral History Graduate
Research Grants. The grants are up to $2500 apiece to UCLA graduate
students in any field of study who, as part of their dissertation
research are conducting oral history or other in-depth qualitative
interviews with a comparable social or historical focus. Two such
awards were granted in 2006.
