Welcome
to the Gold Shield web site which provides not only an electronic
archive of our 70 years of support to UCLA, but presents easily accessible
and up-to-date information about our organization. Explore our Scholarship
page and view the long list of scholars who have been given more than
a million dollars since the first Gold Shield Scholarships were awarded
in 1939.
In
these pages you will see evidence of growth and change in Gold Shield
as it reflects the history of our times, our university, and our community.
Gold Shield has assisted in preserving the university and Southern
California history through our support of the Oral History Program.
We invite you to look at the extensive list of interviews funded by
Gold Shield on our Oral History
Pages. Gold Shield has always honored and recognized exceptional contributions
to UCLA. At our annual Champagne Reception, an event that thanks our
donors and introduces our student scholars and Faculty Prize recipient,
we honor outstanding individuals in the UCLA family. Click here for
a list of Champagne
Reception honorees.
The
Gold Shield Faculty Prize,
an Award for Academic Excellence, was created in 1986 in celebration
of our 50th anniversary to recognize and reward UCLA Faculty members
who have demonstrated extraordinary accomplishment in teaching and
in research or creative activity and who have made significant contributions
to undergraduate education.
We
are currently involved in a new major undertaking, The UCLA History
Project, in collaboration with the UCLA Alumni Association. The goal
is to gather and archive all of the history of UCLA and ultimately
publish that history. It has been 37 years since Gold Shield, with
authors Andrew Hamilton '35 and Johnny Jackson '27, published UCLA
on the Move, a history of the first 50 years. Much has happened at
this great university since 1969, so we are excited to be working
toward the publication of a new and complete UCLA history to be published
in 2008.
Our
members span generations and areas of service to our university, communities,
and professions. Many of our members have been honored by the UCLA
Alumni Association with Awards for Excellence.
Gold Shield has raised funds using hard work and creativity. In past
years the spring benefit party raised the bulk of our funds which
were wisely invested. However, the realities of the high cost of fund-raising
have caused the discontinuation of the benefit. For a history of these
imaginative events, click Benefits.
We now seek contributions through our annual outreach, Drive for Dollars,
a brochure mailing that requests donations and introduces the current
year's scholars and our Tribute Envelopes. For information on how
to donate to Gold Shield click How to Contribute.
Throughout
these pages you will learn about a dedicated group of exceptional
women, proud Bruins all, committed to serving the needs of UCLA.
